Doane's
chapter was chartered on November 9th, 1996. We were chartered by
LHRMA (Lincoln Human Resource Management Association) which is a member
of the national organization SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management).
SHRM is an organization made of various human resource professionals
nation wide. In addition, there are over 300 student chapters. This
blend of students and professionals allows for contacts that could help
with finding a job.
As a student chapter of SHRM, our membership
fee is cut by more than half. Also, with a membership, one receives
a monthly HRMagazine, HRNews (a newspaper featuring the latest trends and
issues in the human resource field, as well as legal updates), TeleSHRM
(a network with professional members around the country), etc.
In addition to gaining knowledge in the field
of human resources, we are involved in many activities throughout Doane
and the community. SHRM has a Merit and Superior Merit award for
student chapters that meet the point requirement. For each activity
we are involved in, we are allocated a certain number of points (with certain
guidelines). Once we have accumulated the points required within the time
allowed, we receive the award. A majority of the activities tend
to be community service or human resource oriented. For example,
this school year we have had numerous speakers come to our meetings and
speak on human resources in their particualr company and industry. In
addition, we participate with the highway clean up program, have assisted
with a canned food drive, taken tours of the human resource department
in various companies, conducted mock interviews with high school students,
etc. We currently have 15 members and have been approached by
other students who are interested in joining.
Our chapter has recently purchased a P.H.R.
(Professional Human Resource) certification study guide for members and
alumni who are interested in taking the test for their P.H.R. certification.
