Position at Doane:
College Archivist and Historian, Perkins Library
Number of years as an Omega sponsor:
I've been a sponsor for almost 7 years. I'm an Omega mom and started
as sponsor when my daughter Elizabeth Spencer '05 was a junior.
What makes being an Omega sponsor special:
What I like most about being
a sponsor is having a chance to know the girls. I've worked at Doane
College for 23 years, mostly in positions that didn't allow me to
have much contact with students. When I became an Omega sponsor I
finally had a chance to interact with students.
A few words about myself:
I am a graduate of the University of Nebraska, B.A. and M.A. in
history and architectural history. I worked at the Nebraska State
Historical Society for several years before coming to Doane College.
In my tenure here I have always handled issues and activities
involving Doane's history and archives even though my positions
within the Advancement Office (P.R., Fundraising, Elderhostel, and
Eventing) weren't necessarily history oriented. With my move to
Perkins Library in 2007, I now work with Doane's history and
artifacts every day. I teach archival practicum/intro to museum
studies on the Crete campus and have sponsored internships and
directed studies in those fields. I also teach a hands on history
course for school teachers on the Lincoln campus.
Since 1992 I have led Doane-sponsored tours to the Czech Republic
for alumni and friends of the college. This trip has also been used
as a directed studies internship for students.
Another of my duties at Doane is to serve as the liaison to the
Doane Family Association, Inc. a 1,000 member international
genealogical organization where all members trace their ancestry to
Deacon John Doane who settled on Cape Cod in Massachusetts in the
mid 1600s. Our college founder Thomas Doane also descends from the
Deacon. We do their association newsletter and help with various
activities. In July 2010, the group will come to campus for their
biennial reunion.
I work part-time, as needed, as an architectural historian for
Berggren Architects in Lincoln researching and writing about
historic buildings for National Register nominations and/or historic
preservation tax incentive projects.
When not working, I volunteer my time at our local museum, the Crete
Heritage Society where I serve as president. I am involved in local
and regional Czech projects and I am also the leader of The Kramer
Sisters, a musical trio that performs quite regularly in the area. I
have a husband, 5 children and 3 grandchildren. Hobbies include
genealogy, sewing, quilting, writing, etc.
