W. Stewart Nelson was a very special man to Sigma Phi Theta. He was our sponsor for many years, but more than that he was a very special professor and friend of many generations of Sigma Phi Theta. He knew both the old Sig Phi's and the new Siggies. He was a bright, articulate man. The Stewart Nelson Scholarship Fund at Doane College is extremely important to today's Siggies because these young men who apply are judged on their character, their work at Doane, and their financial need. This scholarship helps Sigma Phi Theta students complete their education. Every year at homecoming, the scholarship is given to an active member of Sigma Phi Theta. Along with a monetary amount comes an extreme sense of honor and achievement to the recipient.
