| Sigma Phi Theta History |
Sigma Phi Theta is a gentleman's organization with a wide range of loyal
members and alumni. Our organization is based on high ideals and unselfish
endeavor, destined to serve its members and to enhance and enrich their
lives through genuine fraternalism.
The order of Sigma Phi Theta had its beginnings on February 17, 1947 on the
campus of Doane College. There were originally seven men who, in turn, chose
others of their friends until a number of 32 men had joined together for the
sole purpose of friendship. These men of blue founded a fraternity that has
now taken its place among the traditions at Doane College.
One tradition that Sigma Phi Theta is extremely proud of is the awarding of
the W. Stewart Nelson Scholarship every year at Homecoming. Every year the
scholarship is given to an active member of Sigma Phi Theta. Along with a
monetary amount comes an extreme sense of honor and achievement to the
recipient. The 2006-2007 recipient was Seth Styskal.
Loyalty is one aspect that is strongly emphasized in the fraternity. This
loyalty can be seen both in the active members and in the former Doane
students that are members of the Sigma Phi Theta Alumni Association.
During the fall of the 2005 school year Sigma Phi Theta was proudly active
on the Doane College campus. The fraternity was the host of numerous
activities and gatherings at a new location Tuxedo Park which were all a
great success. This year's members are involved in many things such as
volunteering at the Garden Square assisted living and countless fundraisers.
Gatherings included the ever popular 70's and 80's party, the new "The
Party," our Halloween Function, Christmas Party, Toga Party, and the annual
Pig Roast where alumni and actives unite for a day of food, drink, and
friendship. Future get-togethers include our annual Spring Formal
Since the early days of Sigma Phi Theta the insignia of the fraternity has
been the Playboy Bunny. The symbol was first adopted at the Spring Formal of
1959 and has been worn with pride by members ever since. The Spring Formal,
more commonly known as “Playboy,” is still celebrated by members of Sigma
Phi Theta every spring in Kansas City. The Bunny has grown to represent a
group of men tightly bound by brotherhood.
We the members of Sigma Phi Theta pride ourselves on recruiting only
the finest individuals. An invitation to join Sigma Phi Theta is a
commitment for life, and thus requires the utmost consideration by
both parties. |
