Tryout Information:
We offer tryouts in both the spring and fall
of each year. Both tryouts are open to any incoming or current female
Doane students. The spring tryout date will be posted online as well as
sent in a newsletter to all current female Doane students and incoming
females who have indicated that they have an interest in dance through
the Admissions office or by e-mail to captains Alyssa Lindahl at
alyssa.lindahl@dodane.edu or Ashley Wilcox at
ashley.wilcox@doane.edu.
The tryouts are both formal and casual.
Unlike other tryouts, our tryout is a one-day event where delegates
learn six counts of eight: two counts hip-hop, two counts jazz, and two
counts pom. No personal choreography is required as we are more focused
on how the delegate actively learns. Because the learning process is
just as important as the final product, when making the final the
decisions, we pay close attention to how active the delegate is in her
learning of the material: does she ask questions, dance "full-out", act
respectfully, and stay energized?
In addition to the short dance, delegates
need to be prepared to perform some technical elements. The basic
requirements are a pirouette, two consecutive leaps, and a toe-touch
(also called a Russian, straddle jump, tiger, etc.). In terms of
pirouettes, delegates may do any number of consecutive rotations as
possible whether it's a single pirouette or a quad! For leaps, the
first leap must be a straight leg leap but the second can be any leap of
your choice: straight, straddle, split, ring, etc. It does not matter
which side you perform the leaps on. Delegates will be taught the prep
to use when executing the toe-touch. Lastly, bonus points are offered
for an extra technical element. Anything goes for these extra points:
hip-hop stall, fouette turns, hurdler jump, double-stag jump, etc.
Tryouts are judged by current captains and
one to two outside judges.
