The 2008 recipients are:
Kevin L. '83 and Elizabeth (Liz) Resmondo '85 Henning, Crete
Kevin L. and Elizabeth (Liz) Resmondo Henning have been active members of the Crete community since graduating from Doane.
Kevin, a Crete native, graduated from the college in 1983 with a business administration degree. A four-year letterman in track, he was a five-time Nebraska Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion, a six-time NAIA District XI champion as well as an NAIA All-American long-jumper. Kevin continues to hold the Doane College long-jump record he set in 1982.
In 1983, Kevin married Liz, a Wauneta native. Liz, a team captain and four-year track letter winner, was a consistent scorer in the long sprints from 300 yards to 600 yards and in 1983 was the NAIA District XI 600-yard champion. She graduated in 1985 with an elementary education degree and taught country school at Fairview District 57 and Valley View District 18 before leaving teaching to join Kevin at their Crete sporting goods store, K.H.'s.
Over the years, their venture diversified and expanded, adding a gift boutique, Crete Floral and Kava Corner. For nine years, they operated a successful second store in Seward.
This fall, they will embark on a new journey as they open Kava House Café in Crete, with an expanded menu and a drive-through.
Their business has been a staple in Crete for more than 20 years. They have employed high-school and college students too numerous to count and have fulfilled orders for custom T-shirts and clothing that could easily number into the hundreds of thousands. From Doane athletics to CHS Booster Club and 4-H, they have screen printed and embroidered their way into the hearts of the Crete and Doane communities.
Through the years, the Hennings have been involved in many Crete community organizations and causes. They are members of the Crete Chamber of Commerce, served on the Doane Alumni Council and served as chairs of the Doane Area Campaign. Both serve as TeamMates mentors and they served as volunteer Little League and Park and Recreation coaches for 10 years. Kevin was a volunteer firefighter for 10 years and Liz has donated time as a member of Friends of the Crete Library, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate), NSEAC (Nebraska Special Education Advisory Council), and Beta Sigma Phi. Members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Liz helped found the Lambs of Christ Preschool program and served as its director for 11 years. She has also served as Sunday school teacher and member of the church council; both served as youth group leaders for six years.
In recent years, they have received the Crete Booster Club Award, the Crete FBLA Entrepreneur-of-the-Year Award and were recognized as the Crete High School Diversified Occupations Cooperative Education Employer-of-the-Year.
The couple resides in Crete with their two sons, Keenan and Kieran.
