BAUER CLAIMS POLE VAULT CHAMPIONSHIP

In her final collegiate meet, Doane College senior Meagan Bauer (Gering, Neb.) was final able to break through a barrier that had been in her way since her freshman year of college.  Bauer had claimed runner-up honors five times in the women's pole vault in seven opportunities (Indoor and Outdoor seasons) and today she was able to claim her first National Championship.

Bauer was able to battle through the rain and winds to vault 11-09.75 to win the meet.  She had hit each height that she attempted on the first attempt until her final round when she was unable to hit 12-03.00.

"We had experienced a lot of wind throughout the spring season and I think that helped me today," Bauer commented.  "We were vaulting into a head wind after the event was postponed for 30 minutes because of heavy rain.  The conditions were not ideal but with some of the weather we had this year, I was use to it and focused on my goal."

Bauer has received a teaching job at Bayard High School next fall and will look to continue vaulting, now for fun.

"I'm excited that I won, I've been trying for four years and I've done it.  It's a little sad to be done but I'm excited to continue pole vaulting, now it will be for fun.  I can sit back the next few days and cheer on my teammates; we have had a good first day and will look to build on it."
