COMPLETE MEET RESULTS RUNAWAY VICTORIES! Doane Claims GPAC Titles
Doane College claimed both the men's and women's Great Plains Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday, May 3. The women won their 10th straight title by scoring 208 points. The men ended Nebraska Wesleyan's 19 year run by outscoring the Prairie Wolves by 34 points, 212-178.
The women won the title with a balanced attack, winning only seven event titles. Abby Schlueter (Beatrice, Neb.) and Regan Carlstom (St. Edward, Neb.) won two events each for the Tigers. Carlstrom set a school record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.79.
The men won the title with nine individual event champions. Paulvince Obuon (Kenya) and Jared Schuurmans (Norfolk, Neb.) won two events each. Schuurmans set a GPAC and Doane record in the discus with a throw of 176-03 and a GPAC record in the shot put with a throw of 55-10.
"This championship was great for our kids," said Doane Head Coach Ed Fye, referring to the men's team ending Nebraska Wesleyan's 19-year win streak. "Losing by less than two points each of the past two years, the guys came in with a new focus and it started with a win during the indoor season. The second part of the season goal was accomplished tonight by claiming the outdoor championship. Their hard work, which started in September really paid off here in May. I'm sure they felt it has been a long season but they remained focused towards the goal."
"Our depth played a key part in winning the women's title," Fye commented. "Winning only seven events, the kids stepped up when the opportunity was there and we need them to. We heard that our lead was only two points and I told our pole vaulters that we needed them to rally together and get us some points. They came out and took four of the five top spots!"
