A distinguished history.
The first liberal arts and sciences institution in Nebraska, the history of Doane College extends all the way back to 1871, when the General Association of Congregational Churches established an academy in Crete to serve the region as a literary institution of the highest order. On July 11, 1872, thanks to the combined efforts of the local Congregational pastor and Thomas Doane, chief civil engineer for the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad, Crete Academy was reborn as Doane College, an incorporated non-profit institution governed by an independent, self-perpetuating board of trustees.
Nationally recognized for excellence.
For more than 130 years, the college has served Nebraska, the nation, and the world as a pioneering liberal arts and sciences institution. Doane is dedicated to challenging students to realize their fullest potential and preparing them to become ethical leaders who impact their communities in meaningful ways. Along the way, it has earned national recognition for its innovative, student-centered approach to a liberal arts and sciences education. It has been consistently ranked among the top Midwestern schools for five consecutive years by U.S.News & World Report; named one of the "Best Colleges" in the Midwest by The Princeton Review; and called a "hidden treasure" by Kaplan/Newsweek College Catalog.
