Interterm Courses

Interterms offered in the past include trips to such places as:

Scotland-England - The group traveled the city of Edinburgh through a guided orientation tour (including the Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, Holyrood Palace - the queen's residence in Edinburgh, St. Giles Cathedral, and Mary King's Close - one of the most haunted places in Scotland). They also visited nearby Roslin (recently made famous by the DaVinci Code). They departed for Glasgow, via Stirling Castle and took a breathtaking cruise on Loch Lomond.

Thailand - Education majors  taught in a school of about 2,800 students owned by a Doane graduate in the Bangkok area of Thailand. Students taught math in the second and third grade and tried to model "active student learning" and applying math concepts rather than just memorizing.

Alabama - Five decades after the civil rights movement, students marched the streets of Birmingham and Montgomery. The students and their professor traveled to Alabama in January 2007 for an Interterm class to research and experience the power of the movement. While in Alabama, they visited museums and monuments, interviewed people involved in the movement and shot photos and video.

Costa Rica - This naturalist-guided coast-to-coast tour captured the best of Costa Rica's outdoor adventures. The trip began with a visit to the Caribbean island village of Tortuguero and its canal-filled national park, an important green sea turtle nesting site and home to various reptiles, birds, big cats, sloths, and monkeys.

China - In this new century, it is clear that China will be one of the big stories in the news.  Yet most of us know very little about this extraordinary country, and the way in which it will affect our world in years to come.  This course was a chance for students to experience China's society and culture.

Australia - Students are given the opportunity to visit tropical rainforests, coral reefs, the Bush, the Outback, Sydney and a number of animal reserves and cultural centers.

Italy - This two-week interterm is designed to provide experiences that introduce you to many of the magnificent cities of this country. You will explore cathedrals, ruins, monuments, food, and historic places in central and northern Italy.

Mexico - This interterm will give you an opportunity to explore both urban and small town indigenous cultures of Mexico. You will participate in a language program in Cuernavaca and Tepoztlán, Mexico, and will live with Mexican families for two weeks.

Ghana - This is a 15-day interterm to Ghana, West Africa. You will visit sites where Peace Corps volunteers and the Nebraska Conference UCC partnership have made economic, educational, and environmental positive change; hike in two national parks, one with a lovely waterfall and pond for swimming and another with swinging bridges over the rainforest.

The Caribbean - Including travel in the Atlantic Ocean and through the Caribbean Sea, this interterm enables students to become familiar with the cultures and rich history of many of the islands included in the Greater and Lesser Antilles.

India - Rough Guide to India writes: "Walk the streets of any Indian city and you'll rub shoulders with representatives of several of the world's great faiths, a multitude of castes and outcastes...You'll also encounter temple rituals since the Egyptian pharaohs, onion-domed mosques, erected centuries before the Taj Mahal was ever dreamt of, and quirky echoes of the British Raj on virtually every corner."

England  - Through visits to many scenic and historic sights, you will experience the British lifestyle and gain an understanding and appreciation of the rich history and cultural heritage of England.

Texas Coast - Exploring the marine environment brings endless intrigue and fascination. This interterm involves a three-week trip to Galveston Island, Texas, to study marine biology.

Japan  - In this 14-day course, you will enjoy an authentic cross-cultural opportunity as you travel to Doane's sister school in Japan.

New Orleans - Doane students spent January 2006 in New Orleans and rural Mississippi, completing a service learning course that combined volunteer work with a study of the environmental and social toll of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Europe - Doane Choir tours internationally every three years.  Planned destinations include Schwaebisch Hall.  This concert would be Doane Choir's fourth concert in Schwaebisch Hall in the last 20 years; we are a known commodity there!
