| Course design | Integrated course design, by L. Dee Fink, is a model for designing a course that includes attention to components that are present in most all models of instructional design, e.g., learning goals, learning activities, methods of assessment, etc.; however, it goes beyond other models and is distinct from them in significant ways. Integrated course design is an interactive model which emphasizes the need for the components to be aligned or integrated with each other, and shows how to achieve this. It is capable of showing where several major ideas on good teaching (e.g. active learning, educative assessment, teaching strategies) fit into the overall design of courses, and offers specific criteria for determining whether individual components and the whole course have been designed well or not. The model of integrated course design is contained in the "Self-Directed Guide to Designing Courses for Significant Learning." Back to top |

Instruction/ assessment | IF-AT: The Immediate Feedback Assessment Technique by Epstein Educational Enterprises is a technique that can be used in the classroom that combines instruction and assessment. IF-AT is a testing system that provides an interactive learning opportunity for students and a more informative assessment opportunity for teachers. Use of the IF-AT testing system enables students (or a group of collaborating students) to be provided with immediate feedback about the accuracy of their answers to each question in a test/quiz/homework assignment, etc. as the students are completing each item. The IF-AT system provides immediate affirmative feedback (if an answer choice is correct) and/or corrective feedback (if an answer choice is incorrect).
