Basketball Teams Raising Awareness for Cancer

Article Body
On Wednesday, February 15, the Doane College Basketball teams will be hosting their annual Fight Against Cancer night. The special evening will take place as the Tigers play host to rival Nebraska Wesleyan University with the women's contest set to tip off at 6:00 PM and the men to follow at 8:00 PM.

Leading up to the game, Doane players and coaches have been collecting donations, selling t-shirts and raffling off a quilt all in an effort to raise money for cancer research. The proceeds will be donated to the "V" Foundation and the Kay Yow Cancer Research Fund, both foundations in honor of legendary basketball coaches who have lost their battles with cancer.

Anyone interested in making a contribution can continue to do so through the games on Wednesday, February 15. During halftime of the men's game, the quilt that was donated will be raffled away. T-shirts are available by pre-ordering by February 9 and cost of the shirts is $12.00. Some shirts may be available to purchase the day of the NWU-Doane games.

The basketball rivalry dates back to the 1910-11 season as the Tigers defeated NWU, 29-23. Since that game, the two squads have met a total of 189 times with the Prairie Wolves claiming a victory in early January. The victory for NWU broke the series tie as the Prairie Wolves now lead the series, 95-94.

The Doane women hold the all-time series lead over the Prairie Wolves, 57-21, following a victory in Lincoln earlier this season. The two teams first met in the 1974-75 season with Doane winning the first meeting, 50-49.
