Doane Home Runs Lead to Sweep

The Doane Tiger softball team closed out the 2010 regular season with a pair of walk-off, home run, victories on Sunday afternoon against Peru State College. In game one, Doane was won, 9-1, in six innings, as they used a two-run home run to enforce the 8-run mercy rule. In the second game, a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh gave Doane a 5-4 win.

Game One
Doane jumped out early, scoring seven runs in the first two innings. The run support allowed starter Jennifer Liddell to cruise to the victory.

In the bottom of the first, Whitney Poole walked and with one out she stole second and third base. Christy Kobza followed with a double to plate Poole. With two outs in the inning, Jennifer Montoya hit a two-run home run to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead after one inning.

In the second inning, the Tigers had six hits to plate four runs. Jennifer Liddell led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a single by Alyssa Maraia. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and came around to score on a double to right-center off the bat of Kayla Hochstein. Hochstein moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a single by Poole to give the Tigers a 6-0 lead.

Following a pitching change, Hannah Kroese singled to move Poole to third base. Kroese stole second base and Kobza singled to score Poole to give the Tigers a seven-run advantage.

Peru State scored their lone run of the game in the top of the fifth. The Bobcats put together a double and a single with two outs to put the run across the plate.

In the bottom of the sixth, Poole reached on a fielder's choice and was at first with two outs and Kroese at the plate. On a full count pitch, Kroese drilled a two-run, home run around the left field foul poll to give Doane a 9-1 win.

Liddell went six innings, allowing one run on six hits while striking out five.

Kroese finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with a run and two RBIs. Kobza went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. Poole was 1-for-3 with three runs, two stolen bases and a RBI. Hochstein finished 1-for-3 with a run and two RBIs.


Game Two
Doane scored first but rallied late as the Bobcats scored in four separate innings.

The Tigers plated a run in the second inning. Kayla Hochstein singled with one out and moved to second on a single by Amber Stater. Gina Falciani followed with a single up the middle to score Hochstein.

In the third, Peru State used a lead off single by Alexis Trujillo, a sacrifice bunt and a single by Krista Patton down the left field line to score a run to tie the game at 1-1.

The Bobcats took the lead in the fourth on a solo home run by Samantha Walker. In the fifth, Patton hit a solo home run to give Peru State a 3-1 lead.

The Tigers answered in the bottom of the sixth with a run but stranded the tying run on base. Jennifer Montoya singled and was run for by Megan Wingate. Hochstein added a single to put two runners on base.

Amber Stater hit a line drive to third but the ball was dropped by Brianna Triplett. However, she knocked the ball straight down and recovered to force Wingate out at third base. Falciani delivered a single to center field to score Hochstein and pull the Tigers within a run but Doane could not get another run in and trailed 3-2 entering the seventh.

In the seventh, Peru State used a single by Patton and a sacrifice bunt to put an insurance run at second base. With two outs, Emily Maresh doubled to the right field wall to give the Bobcats a 4-2 lead.

Trailing by two, Poole led off the inning with a single up the middle. Kroese followed with a single through the left side to give the Tigers two runners on base as they attempted to tie the game. Facing a 0-1 count, Brooke Sampson sent the next pitch to deep centerfield for a walk-off, three-run home run to win the game for the Tigers.

Sampson finished the game 2-for-4 with a run and three RBIs. Hochstein went 3-for-3 and scored two runs. Falciani went 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

Katie Mosley started the game and threw four innings for the Tigers, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out two. Ashley Dunn threw three innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out three. Dunn picked up the victory for the Tigers.

Doane will enter the GPAC Tournament on Thursday and face Hastings College in the First Round at 4:00 PM.
