Doane scored five times in the sixth inning to rally from behind for an 8-6 victory over Kenyon College in Orange, California. The win moved the Tiger record to 4-3 overall while the Kenyon Ladies fell to 0-2 in their opening weekend of play. Doane jumped on the scoreboard first with a single tally in the bottom of the first inning without recording a hit. Whitney Poole reached on an error to open the inning and eventually came around to score on a passed ball.
Kenyon took the lead in the second as they scored three runs off of Tiger starter Katy Jones. Brittany Vanegas led off the inning with a home run and Elizabeth Refsynder picked up a two-out, two-run single.
The Ladies added a run in the third inning with another two-out single, this one coming off the bat of Jamie Samuel.
Doane came back in the fourth with a pair of runs to cut the lead to 4-3. Jen Montoya walked and was run for by Kelsie Holtus. Holtus stole second base which was followed by a Hannah Kroese walk. Holtus and Kroese pulled off a double steal to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Jenny Jackson drew a pinch-hit walk to load the bases for Gina Falciani. Falciani delivered a single into centerfield to score Holtus and Kroese.
Kenyon built their lead back up with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings as they led 6-3 entering the bottom of the sixth.
Kroese led off the Tiger sixth with a solo home run that woke up the Doane bats. Alyssa Maraia followed with a single and moved to second as Amber Stater reached on a fielder's choice. The first out of the inning was on a fielder's choice in which Maraia was thrown out at third as Falciani replaced her on the bases.
The go-ahead run reached base when Poole drew a walk to load the bases. Jenny Dillon came into the game for the Ladies and was able to induce a pop-up for the second out of the inning. Christy Kobza re-entered the game and reached on a fielder's choice as the third baseman was unable to handle a throw to third to record a force out. Stater scored on the play.
With Doane within a run and the bases still loaded with Tigers, Brooke Sampson delivered the biggest hit of her young college career with a two-out, three-run double to deep right-centerfield to put Doane ahead, 8-6.
Jennifer Liddell, who had taken over on the mound in the top of the sixth, shut down the Ladies in the seventh to pick up the victory.
The key for the Tigers in this game was taking advantage of opportunities given to them. Doane was limited to six hits but were able to record the eight runs in part to five walks and three Kenyon errors. On the flip-side, Doane committed six errors but Tiger pitchers were able to work around the defensive mistakes and allowed only two unearned runs.
At the plate, Maraia led the way with two of the Doane hits. Sampson posted three RBIs and Falciani added two RBIs. Poole and Kroese each scored twice.
