Jacob Cathey induced 12 ground outs while allowing only four hits in seven innings of work as he led Doane to a 5-0 victory over Ashford University on Saturday afternoon. Doane jumped out early and were able to sit back and watch Cathey throw a solid game. Mike Albert and Luke Henderson led off the bottom of the first inning with a pair of single to open the frame. Colt Cochran pinch ran for Henderson and moved up to second base on a ground out by Anthony Hincy. On the play, Albert was able to score from third for the first run of the game. Blake Snow followed with a triple to bring in Cochran and Doane held a 2-0 lead after one inning of play.
The Tigers added to their lead in the third with a single run. Hincy singled and stole second base to lead off the inning and came around to score on a ground out by Tom Frinkman.
In the fourth, Josh Reed led off with a double and came in to score as Albert reached on an error. Doane led 4-0 through four innings.
Doane added to their lead with a run in the fifth. Frinkman scored on a single by Reed after he had reached via base on balls.
Cathey shut down Ashford the rest of the way, not allowing a base runner in the final two innings.
Albert, Snow and Reed collected two hits apiece as Doane finished with nine. Five different players scored and had RBIs.
