Christy Kobza drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Doane to a 4-3 win over Southwestern College. The win moved the Tigers' record to 2-1 on the year. Megan Wingate threw four scoreless innings, striking out five and allowing one hit as she left with a 3-0 lead.
Doane plated three runs in the third inning to jump out to an early lead. Whitney Poole led off the inning with a single and stole second and third base. Kobza singled to plate Poole. Jennifer Ellis ran for Kobza and came around to score on a Brooke Sampson two-run home run.
Southwestern cut the lead to one in the fifth inning as they scored two runs off of reliever Katie Mosley. The Moundbuilders tied the game with a run off of Alyssa Maraia in the sixth as she allowed two hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning. Jenna Alswager closed out the sixth as Southwestern left the bases loaded.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Poole reached on an error by the shortstop and moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Brianna Dickinson. Kobza followed with a single to score Poole and end the game.
Alswager picked up the win with 1.1 innings of work, striking out one.
Kobza went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Tigers and Sampson finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored. Hannah Kroese went 2-for-3 for the Tigers as they finished with nine hits in the game. Poole scored two runs for Doane and finished with two stolen bases to move her season total to seven through three games.
