Doane closed out the first day of the Friends University Classic taking on Bethany College. The Swedes are receiving votes in the NAIA national poll. The Swedes jumped out early but used a big sixth inning to pull away from the Tigers, 10-5. Bethany jumped on the scoreboard with four runs in the first two innings of play off of starter Katy Jones. Jones settled in and finished the game throwing five innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits. She would, however, take the loss in the game.
Trailing 4-0 entering the third, Doane came back to tie the game. Hannah Kroese led off with a single and stole second base. Kayla Hochstein singled to plate Kroese for the Tigers' first run. Whitney Poole reached on an error and stole second base to give the Tigers runners at second and third.
Deidre Cardoza reached on a fielder's choice in which there was not an out recorded and Hochstein was able to score for the second run of the inning. Christy Kobza followed with a sacrifice bunt to bring in Poole from third and move Cardoza to second. Jen Montoya closed out the Tiger scoring with a single to score Cardoza.
Bethany took the lead back in the fifth and opened up the game in the sixth inning with five runs. The Swedes collected four hits off of Ashley Dunn as she allowed five runs in one-third of an inning of work. Megan Wingate came in to pick up the final two outs of the inning but Bethany had taken a 10-4 lead.
In the seventh, Poole singled and moved to third on a ground out by Cardoza. Kobza hit a sacrifice fly to score Poole for the final run of the game.
Brooke Sampson went 3-for-3 for the Tigers in the game while Kroese and Hochstein each went 2-for-2. Kobza had two RBIs and Poole scored two runs.
