Doane jumped out to an early lead and held off Graceland University, 4-1, to pick up the first win of the season in the night cap on Saturday. Doane moved to 1-1 on the year following the first day of play on the season. The Tigers received solid pitching from Jake Cathey and Britton Scheele as they scattered five hits over seven innings. Cathey threw four innings, allowing three hits and striking out one. Scheele allowed the lone run in three innings of work. He gave up two hits and struck out four batters. Cathey picked up the win while Scheele recorded the save.
As the home team on the scoreboard, the Tigers struck with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Mike Albert singled and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Luke Henderson. Anthony Hincy followed with a RBI single. The Tigers left the bases loaded in the inning.
In the bottom of the second, Doane added a pair of runs. AJ Spanel singled to lead off the inning and moved up to third when Dylan Flott reached on an error when looking to sacrifice Spanel to second. Albert grounded out to plate Spanel for a run and Henderson grounded out to score Flott.
Doane added their final run of the game in the fourth inning. Flott led off with a single and moved up on a single by Albert. Henderson grounded out but Flott scored on the play.
Flott finished the game going 2-for-2 with two runs scored in his first start for the Tigers. Albert and Hincy each went 2-for-4 with a RBI while Henderson posted two RBIs for the Tigers.
