Doane College freshman Jillian Ourada became the inaugural champion of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) pentathlon on Friday afternoon. The GPAC introduced the pentathlon and men's heptathlon to the schedule of events for the conference championships this year. Ourada scored 3,262 points, topping her previous best by 180 points. She was the favorite entering the meet and out-ran Dordt's Briana Wubben to claim the championship. Wubben led by 25 points entering the final event, the 800m run.
Ourada ran a time of 2:28.52 and earned 712 points. Wubben ran a time of 2:45.65 and picked up 510 points. Wubben finished with 3,084 points.
Sloan Brandon of Concordia University placed third with 2,921 points and Nebraska Wesleyan's Kate Byrkit was fourth with 2,644 points.
Kayti Mark placed fifth for Doane with 2,624 points. Shannon Bowar of Northwestern finished sixth with 2,516 points.
Doane took the final two places as Emily Reed and Sara Bloom finished seventh and eighth, respectively. Reed posted 2,486 points and Bloom notched 2,465 points.
After the pentathlon, Doane collected 17 points in the team standings through one event. The GPAC championships will conclude on Saturday in Lincoln.
