The Tiger men's track and field team put together a strong performance on Saturday as they hit six automatic NAIA qualifying marks and eight provisional marks. Doane hosted the Scott Nisely Memorial Classic in Crete. Virgil Mitchell put together one of the best performances of the meet, hitting three automatic NAIA marks and a provisional mark in five events.
In the 55m dash, he placed second with a time of 6.45 seconds, an automatic mark. In the 200m dash, Mitchell ran a time of 22.53, a provisional mark, to win the event. He won the 55m hurdles with a time of 7.61, an automatic mark. In the high jump, he took second with an automatic mark of 2.03m (6-08.00). He anchored the 4x400m relay and lifted them to a second place finish after a teammate was tripped up on the lead leg. Mitchell received the baton with his team in sixth place and passed up four other teams.
Vince Martinez won the 400m dash with a time of 51.86 seconds. Justin Cox won the 800m run with a time of 2:00.89. Sufian Kalil took the 1000m run with a time of 2:34.43. The Doane 4x800m relay team won in a time of 8:19.43.
Derek Wegner hit a provisional mark in the high jump with a leap of 1.98m (6-06.00).
In the pole vault, Nathan Teten and Whit Thomas reached automatic qualifying marks. Both men hit 4.70m with Teten winning the event based on missed attempts.
Brett Jorgensen hit a pair of provisional marks in the long and triple jump. In the long jump, he hit a mark of 6.93m (22-09.00) and in the triple jump, he posted a mark of 14.11m (46-03.50).
Jared Schuurmans hit an automatic mark in the shot put with a heave of 16.92m (55-06.25). Alvin Voss threw 15.09m (49-06.25) and picked up a provisional mark.
In the weight throw, three Tigers picked up provisional marks. Zane Pfefferle posted a mark of 15.91m (52-02.50). Jake Eckhardt had a toss of 15.78m (51-09.25) and Voss picked up a mark of 15.68m (51-05.50).
