Fifteen Athletes Earn All-American Honors

Doane College track and field athletes completed the 2009 Outdoor Track & Field season in Edwardsville, Illinois, participating in the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Meet.  The Tigers took 40 athletes to compete in this year's championship meet. 

Doane put their first points of the meet on the board on Friday afternoon and evening as six athletes earned NAIA All-American honors with Top Eight finishes in their respective events.

On Saturday, five individuals and two relay teams earned All-American honors.


Eleven Men Earn All-American Honors for Doane

Jared Schuurmans (Norfolk) placed third in the men's shot put with a throw of 54-02.00.  Chad Smith of Concordia (Oregon) won the event with a toss of 61-04.75. 

Maurice Smith (Dallas, Tex.) placed fourth in the long jump, dropping a tie-breaker based on second best jump.  Scott Gill of Taylor University won the event with a mark of 24-05.00. 

Ross Smithey (Lebanon, Mo.) placed fifth in the decathlon with 6,621 points.  Jonathan Hilton of Oklahoma Baptist scored 7,233 points to win the decathlon. 

D'Artagnan Dai'Re (West Covina, Calif.) finished fifth in the 100m dash with a time of 10.68.  Tyrell Cuffy of King College won with a time of 10.41.

The men's 4x100m relay team notched the first points of the day on Saturday for the Tigers.  The relay team of Kedrick Kelley (Houston, Tex.), Adam Bosley (Toronto, Ontario), Ben McCaleb (Omaha) and Dai'Re ran a time of 40.67.  Dickinson State's relay team won with a time of 40.09. 

Virgil Mitchell (Omaha) notched a sixth place finish in the 400m hurdles with a time of 53.95.  Allan Ayala of Dickinson State defended his 2008 title with a first place finish in a time of 50.75.

In the discus, Schuurmans placed fourth with a throw of 180-04.  Nik Kay of Concordia (Oregon) won the event with a toss of 150-04.

Sufian Kimo (Norfolk) earned eighth place in the 5,000m run with a time of 15:02.73.  Carison Kemei of McKendree College won the race in a time of 14:27.63.

Rounding out the final event of the competition, the 4x400m relay team placed eighth to earn All-American honors.  The team ran a time of 3:16.02 and was comprised of Jacob Kreikemeier (Dodge), Vince Martinez (El Paso, Tex.), Bosley and Mitchell.  Dickinson State University won the race with a time of 3:06.58.

In the end, eleven (11) men earned All-American honors in nine events.  Doane finished with 35 points and tied for eighth place overall at the NAIA meet.

 

Four Women Earn All-American Honors for Doane

On the women's side, Jallan Holmes (Lincoln) finished sixth in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.64 on Friday afternoon.  Tiffeny Parker of Azusa Pacific won the race in a time of 14.21. 

Abby Schlueter (Beatrice) placed eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 38-03.25.  Cecila Mbona of Lindenwood won the event with a mark of 41-03.75.

In action on Saturday, the women received points in two events.  Gretchen Clark (Cozad) placed third in the high jump with a mark of 5-07.00.  She tied for the second best jump in the meet but dropped back to third based on jump attempts.  Natasha Miller of Biola won the event with a mark of 5-10.75. 

Deejay Silcott (El Paso, Tex.) placed fifth in the 200m dash with a time of 24.72.  Kimberly Smith of Wayland Baptist won the race in a time of 23.72.

In total, four Tiger women earned NAIA All-American honors and totaled 13.5 points in the meet.  Doane placed 18th overall at the championship meet and posted the top mark by a Great Plains Athletic Conference team.
