Each week is a new meet and each week there is an opportunity to see something special. At the Concordia Last Chance Meet to qualify for the NAIA National Meet, the Tiger record books were erased once again this year in the discus.
Jared Schuurmans owned the record entering the 2009 Spring season but the mark he once had has been re-written three times now. On Friday evening, Schuurmans broke out a throw of 190-04, topping his previous best by six feet. It was only two weeks ago at the Drake Relays that he broke the mark by two feet. In the first meet of the season at Hastings, Schuurmans broke his 2008 best throw by nearly six feet.
"He has really taken some steps forward this year," David Dunnigan, Doane's throw coach, said. "He continues to mature and takes everything in stride. He put a lot of time in at the weight room and in practice and his extra efforts have paid off. It has been a lot of fun to watch him improve over each week."
Schuurmans will take the best throw into the NAIA National Meet next week in Edwardsville, Ill. He is also in second place in the shot put entering the championship meet.
In other action at the Last Chance Meet in Seward, the women's 4x100m relay team hit an automatic time of 48.42. The team ranks 18th heading into the national meet.
Leah Petersen and Ale Cano each went 11-03.75 in the pole vault. Petersen is tied for 14th going into the national meet.
Janelle Weber won the triple jump with an automatic mark of 37-09.25. She will enter the national meet with the eighth best mark of the season.
Sarah Hinman hit a provisional mark in the discus and she is 14th in the NAIA. Mindy Nguyen hit a provisional mark in the javelin with a throw of 130-08.
D'Artagnan Dai'Re won the men's 100m dash with a time of 10.57. Kedrick Kelley was second with a time of 10.79. Dai'Re is seventh in the NAIA and Kelley is ninth entering the championship meet.
Virgil Mitchell won the 110m and 400m hurdles races. In the 110m, he posted a season-best mark of 14.23 and is third in the NAIA. In the 400m race, he ran a time of 53.44 and sits ninth in the NAIA. Both of his winning marks were NAIA automatic times.
The men's 4x100m relay team ran a time of 41.42 and they will take the fifth best time into the championship meet. The 4x400m realy team posted a time of 3:13.45 and are currently fourth in the NAIA.
