After finally getting the monkey off their back, the Tigers have gotten on a roll as they picked up their third straight win with a victory over Hastings College, 65-62.
Hastings jumped out to an early nine point lead and eventually led by 10 points in the first half. The Broncos took a seven point lead, 34-27, into halftime behind 42-percent shooting. Doane shot 43-percent from the floor in the half but only 1-of-8 from behind the arc.
Doane used a 9-1 run midway through the second half to take their lead of the game, 42-41, with 12:07 remaining. The two teams went back and forth over the next five minutes before back-to-back scores gave the Tigers their largest lead at 55-50 with 5:17 remaining.
Hastings battled back and took the lead with 1:40 remaining on a pair of free throws from Derek Fletcher. The Tigers came right back to take the lead on a hoop from Jack Lind, a Hastings native. Again, the Broncos came back to retake the lead at 62-61 on a basket from Wade Vontz.
Doane committed a turnover in the final minute giving Hastings an opportunity to run some clock. Doane was able to pick up a stop and with 15 seconds left they took a timeout. The Tiger play went to Kendall Frantz as he converted a lay-up with under 10 seconds remaining. Hastings turned over the ball on their possession and Jake Johnson knocked down two free throws to seal the victory.
Johnson finished with 17 points while Tyler Weatherholt added 13 points. Jens Scholl battled through a rough night shooting to lead the team with five rebounds and four assists. Johnson led the team with four steals.
Hastings had four players in double figures, led by Vontz' 16 points. Derrik Spooner and Brent McNurlin added 12 points each for the Broncos.
