Doane and Dakota State battled in a Region III contest on Wednesday afternoon in Crete and the two teams split their doubleheader. Doane took game one, 12-2 in six innings, with Dakota State winning game two, 11-6.
In game one, Marshall Carr threw a complete game, five-hitter for the Tigers. He allowed two runs in the first inning and held the Trojans off the board the rest of the way.
Doane tied the game in the first inning and then strung together eight hits in the fourth to plate seven runs. Adam Bies keyed the inning with a two-run double on an 0-2 count.
For the game, Chris Williams and Evan Bumgarner finished with three hits each while Mike Mendenhall and Cody Shoultz added two hits a piece. Bies led the Tigers with three RBIs while Shoultz, Williams and Bumgarner each picked up two RBIs.
In game two, Dakota State used a pinch-hit grand slam from Matt Burpee to propel them to a victory. With a 4-1 lead in the fifth, Burpee connected with one out in the inning off of Robert Read. Kyle Schachenmeyer took the loss, allowing six runs in four innings.
Bumgarner finished the day with his second three-hit game, going 3-for-4. Bies went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Tim Engelhaupt paced the Tigers with three runs batted in.
