The Tigers faced off against Morningside College on Tuesday in a make-up game from Saturday. Doane did not come out playing well as they committed six errors in the first game and lost 13-0. The Tigers rebounded with a 7-6 victory in eight innings in game two.
The Mustangs scored four runs in the first two innings and ran away with game one. Jacob Bartek took the loss as he allowed seven runs, two earned, in five innings of work. Chris Plourde gave up six runs, zero earned, in 1.2 innings.
Mike Mendenhall picked up two hits for Doane as the Tigers were held to four in the game. Tim Engelhaupt and Philip Tan added the other Doane hits.
In game two, Doane built a 5-1 lead before Morningside battled back late in the game. Engelhaupt doubled in two runs in the third inning while Doane plated three runs in the fourth behind a two-run single from Chris Williams.
Morningside responded with single runs in the fifth and sixth inning. With two outs in the seventh, the Mustangs rallied to plate two runs to tie the game at 5-5. Doane left runners on base in the bottom of the seventh.
In the eighth, Morningside plated a run to take a 6-5 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Mendenhall led off with a single and was advance on a sacrifice bunt. Chris Williams re-entered the game after being replaced defensively and was hit by a pitch to give Doane two runners on base.
Adam Bies was next and delivered a single to plate Mendenhall to tie the game at 6-6. Engelhaupt grounded out to move the base runners up a bag each but it was also the second out of the inning. Bryan Dutcher was stepped to the plate and he delivered a hit past the diving Mustang shortstop to score Williams with the game-winning run.
Mendenhall finished with a 3-for-5 at the plate, scoring two runs. Engelhaupt ended with three RBIs.
