Doane and Kansas Wesleyan played two games on Saturday and saw both ends of the softball spectrum, a slugfest and a pitcher's dual. In game one, Doane was unable to hold on to an early lead and fell 13-12 in eight innings. In game two, Doane won a nail-bitter 1-0.
The Tigers jumped out with five runs in their half of the first inning in game one. They led 6-2 after two innings but an eight-run fourth inning by the Coyotes put the Tigers in a hole they would have to dig out of. Doane responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth only to see KWU score two in the fifth. Again, the Tigers bounced back with three in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 12-12. The two teams remained scoreless until the eighth inning.
Offensively, Doane compiled 16 hits with five coming off the bat of Jennifer Montoya. She finished 5-for-5 with two triples and three RBIs. Hannah Kroese was 2-for-5 with four RBIs. Stephanie Mosley scored three runs for the Tigers. On the mound, Megan Steele and Jennifer Liddell were charged with 10 earned runs. Liddell took the loss in the first game.
In game two, Doane scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning as Pamela Masker singled to score Hannah Kroese. Joy Vasa made the run stand up as she threw a complete game five-hitter. She struck out two batters in the shutout.
Kansas Wesleyan had scoring opportunities in the third and fifth innings. In the third inning, KWU had four batters reach base but no one was able to get past second base due to a couple of force outs on the base paths. In the fifth, KWU had a runner thrown out at the plate as she tried to score on a single to center field. Vasa faced the minimum number of batters in four of the seven innings played.
