The Opening Convocation Tradition
Every year at the start of the term, faculty, staff and students come together in Heckman Auditorium for "Opening Con." This long-standing tradition marks the beginning of the term and welcomes new students to campus.
At Opening Con Aug. 30, Doane welcomed a class much honored in its high school careers. Kim Jacobs, vice president for enrollment management and student leadership, shared statistics of the 294 incoming students:

90 National Honor Society members
22 class or student body presidents
122 academic or athletic team captains
173 varsity athletes
32 all-state band or choir members
41 speech or debate team members
53 lead performers in high school musicals or plays
39 editors of their school's literary journal, student newspaper or yearbook
13 Eagle Scout or Gold Award winners
14 valedictorian and salutatorians
27 Quiz Bowl members
167 community service participants
35 who had visited foreign countries
These newest of faces to Doane are well-rounded and will bring much richness to campus.
