Course Work

The philosophy curriculum at Doane is designed to give you both breadth and depth. Courses in the history of philosophy, ethics, philosophical problems, comparative philosophy, and logic provide breadth. Courses in philosophy of science, religious studies, and selected topics provide depth. Students who complete the major will be well prepared for graduate study. Those who minor will be exposed to the central questions of philosophy and this will undoubtedly enhance their performance in their major.

The MAJOR requires 33 hours of coursework (11 courses)*:

1. PRE 110 Philosophical Problems

2. PRE 111 Ethics

3. PHI 105 Logic and Critical Thinking

4. One course chosen from PHI 3/411 Philosophy of Science or PRE 231 History and Philosophy of Technology

5. One course chosen from PHI 210 Ancient and Medieval Philosophy or PHI 212 Modern and Contemporary Philosophy

6. One course chosen from PHI 310 Comparative Philosophy or PHI/PSI 337 Political Thought

7. One course chosen from any RST or PRE 120 Old Testament or PRE 121 New Testament

8. Three additional courses (9 additional credits) in PHI or RST, one course (3 credits) of which must be at the 400 level (excluding PHI or RST 495 Exam and Thesis)

9. PHI 495 Exam and Thesis

The MINOR requires 18 hours of coursework (6 courses)*:

1. One course chosen from PRE 110 Philosophical Problems orPRE 111 Ethics

2. One course chosen from PRE 120 Old Testament or PRE 121 New Testament or Any RST

3. One course chosen from PHI 210 Ancient and Medieval Philosophy or PHI 212 Modern and Contemporary Philosophy or PHI 310 Comparative Philosophy

4. PHI 105 Logic and Critical Thinking

5. Two additional courses (6 additional credits) in PHI or RST, one of which must be at the 300 or 400 level.
