The Division of Economics and Business is committed to providing the opportunities and environment for students to develop analytical and creative thought processes to make effective and ethical business-related decisions. Majors are offered in: Accounting, Business Administration, Business Principles (for secondary education students), and Economics.

Program Emphases

Through case studies, simulations, internships, classroom study and discussions, and research, students at Doane are active participants in learning. The Accounting program is designed for students who seek careers in public and private accounting.

Doane's Accounting program has been approved by the State of Nebraska as meeting the 150-hour rule, required before a candidate may take the Certified Public Accounting (CPA) exam. Business Division faculty carefully guide students through the program to prepare them for CPA certification.

Course Offerings

A variety of Accounting courses, along with coursework in business, mathematics, and economics, prepare students for a professional career. A partial listing of course offerings includes:

  • Auditing

Students

Approximately 160-180 students major in one of the four areas in the Division of Economics and Business.

Accounting students benefit from:

  • Small class sizes with real world activities - Introductory courses, 25-30 students;
  • Upper-level courses, approximately 15 students
  • Student tutoring/mentoring opportunities, including student-led accounting labs
  • Completion of the 150 hours required to sit for the Uniform CPA exam in four years, with the opportunity to sit for the exam in the spring of their senior year
  • Internship opportunities

Internships

Doane students may participate in month-long or semester-long internships, gaining hands-on work experience for college credit.

Requirements for an Accounting Minor

Complete 20 credits in Accounting courses.
