The Theatre Department

At Doane, we believe that great theatre programs must prepare and train students for careers in all contemporary and emerging entertainment forms -- including live theatre, film, television, video, themed entertainment, and more. Our students live in a world that is interactive, collaborative, and fueled by their passion for our art form -- one that encompasses the many forms of professional practice as well as the theoretical exploration of current and emerging entertainment forms.
Our faculty and staff are known for their artistic accomplishments, professional achievements, and their ability to serve as inspiring teachers and mentors. Our students are passionate about the theatre and its possibilities -- in both scholarship and performance; they are eager to experiment and take creative risks.
As an example of that risk-taking, in January 2006, our innovative rendition of Phedre was honored as a selected production to present at the 2006 Region V ACTF in Fargo, North Dakota. Our production of Woyzeck received a nomination for best scene the next year. In 2008 our homage to Buster Keaton, Reeling, was again honored with a nomination for best selected production. Then at that festival, Doane College was awarded three outstanding accolades: the honored Meritorious Achievement Awards for Comic Ensemble (cast of Reeling); Acting Ensemble (cast of The Arabian Nights); & Costume Design (Donna Himmelberger for The Arabian Nights.)
Finally this year's production of Well received our third nomination for best selected production over the past four years. Doane students achieved more impressive honors at Festival 2009 including placing as a semi-finalist at the Irene Ryan, 2nd place in scenic design, and selected director at the 10-minute Play Competition. Our student playwright's entry to the highly competitive Fourth Annual Great Plains Theatre Conference was accepted for a Play Lab reading this spring out of over 400 plays that were submitted nationally.
If you are looking for program where you can excel as an artist, Doane College is the perfect fit for you.
