The elementary education program prepares students to teach kindergarten through eighth-grade. A range of field experiences in the sophomore and junior years help students decide which grade level they would most like to teach. Students majoring in elementary education must also complete a major or endorsement in: Middle Grades, Early Childhood, Special Education, English as a second language, Spanish, music, mathematics, science and physical education.
Teachers can also be certified for kindergarten through 12th-grade in Art, Music, Physical Education, and English as a Second Language.
Doane's special education major leads to preparation for teaching children and youth with mild or moderate mental handicaps, learning disabilities or behavioral disorders. Teachers graduating from this program have certification for teaching kindergarten through 12th grade.
Teachers are certified for secondary schools when completing a teaching major or endorsement in one of the following areas: Art, Biology, Business Principles, Chemistry, English, English/Language Arts, French, German, History, Mathematics, Music, Natural Science, Physical Science, Political Science, Social Science, Spanish, Speech Communication, and Theatre.
A second teaching major or endorsement is required when majoring in the following: Biology, Business Principles, Chemistry, English, French, German, History, Physical Education, Physics, Political Science, Spanish, Speech Communication, and Theatre.
An information technology teaching endorsement or coaching endorsement may be added to the teaching majors.
