Students/Class Size

Approximately 160-180 students major in one of the four areas in the Division of Economics and Business and approximately one-fourth of Doane's student body is enrolled in the Teacher Education program.

  • In introductory courses, class size is approximately 25-30 students
  • In upper-level courses, class size averages approximately 15 students, depending on the area of study  

Field Experience/Student Teaching

At Doane, pre-service teachers complete approximately 300 hours of practicum experience with K-12 students prior to student teaching.

  • You'll begin working in classroom settings your first year
  • Student assisting continues during your sophomore and junior years
  • Full-time student teaching occurs during your senior year (ranging from 14 weeks for one endorsement to a maximum of 24 weeks for two endorsements)

First-Year Mentoring

For many years, Doane has provided mentoring for its first-year teachers.  An experienced teacher in the school works closely with new Doane teachers to help with this transition.  Doane faculty also work with the new teachers, providing support and expertise.

Master of Education Degree

Following graduation in the Teacher Education program, you will extend your training in a summer semester of graduate work.

  • 12 credit hours of graduate work
  • Graduate classes will give you an advantage over other college graduates in credits toward a master's degree.
  • Site-based programs are offered at numerous locations in Nebraska

Secondary Education Course Requirements

Teachers are certified for secondary schools when completing a teaching major or endorsement in one of the following areas: art, biology, business principles, chemistry, English, English/language arts, French, German, history, mathematics, music, natural science, physical science, political science, social science, Spanish, speech communication and theatre, and theatre and drama.

Additional requirements include:

  • Complete seven courses in Education at the 200-400 level
  • Complete the special methods requirement in each of the teaching majors
  • Complete the cognate in Information Science and Technology
  • Attain a 3.00 GPA in education courses, 2.80 GPA in teaching major, and 2.80 cumulative GPA
  • Receive the recommendation of the Teacher Education Committee
  • Complete 12 graduate credits in the summer immediately following graduation and prior to certification.

A second teaching major or endorsement is required when majoring in the following: Biology, Business Principles, Chemistry, English, French, German, History, Physical Education, Physics, Political Science, Spanish, Speech Communication, and Theatre.

A computer science teaching endorsement or coaching endorsement may be added to the teaching majors. See the requirements listed under Information Science and Technology.
