Q: What is CSI: Doane?
A: This is an interactive workshop for high school students who have completed one year of life science. Participants will rotate through several areas, learning about the biology behind techniques used in forensic science, such as DNA fingerprinting, autopsy analysis, and how studying insects can provide information about a crime.
Q: Is there a cost for attending this event?
A: Nope -- It's FREE!
Q: Will the workshop be similar to last year?
A: In many ways the workshop will be similar, but we have made several changes that we feel will improve the overall experience for the students. Students, in teams of three, will rotate through a total of nine workshops, with each individual student rotating through three different workshops. Each workshop will provide valuable information about the murder mystery so a team will have the best odds of solving the mystery if they divide the workshops evenly among the three members. If a school brings three students, that will also be your investigative team. You will be responsible for selecting the workshops and making sure that all nine are covered on your application. If a school decides to send only one or two students, you can list your workshop preferences, but the students will be placed on teams with students from other schools. We will do our best to give students their preferred workshops, however we cannot guarantee that students from incomplete teams will get into the workshops they request because we want their team to have an equal opportunity for solving the murder mystery. This will also help us to ensure that the workshops are small enough that it is a valuable experience for each student.
Q: When is it?
A: Thursday, October 30, 2008. Check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m. It will consist of an opening, several small group workshops, and a wrap-up. Please refer to the CSI Doane Schedule for more information. The program will end around 12:30 p.m. and there will be an optional lunch and tour hosted by our Admissions Office following the CSI workshop activities. Everything should be completed around 2:00 p.m.
Q: What should I do if I want to come?
A: All teams/individuals must register online to attend. Fill out an online application when they are available on October 2, 2008. You will need the names, contact information, and workshop preferences of the students attending. You can view the sample application and fill it out ahead of time to speed up the online application process.
Q: Can I bring more than three students?
A: Last year the workshop filled very quickly (within 4 hours), and in order to include as many schools as possible we had to limit participation to three students per school.
Q: Can I bring fewer than three students?
A: Yes. If you send only one or two students they will be added to a team on the day of the event.
Q: Do students need a sponsor?
A: Students may attend on their own without a sponsor. If a teacher or another sponsor wants to come, they are welcome. Although we will not have specific programming for teachers or other sponsors, there will be a designated room (with coffee!) full of forensic related resources to look at. They are also welcome to "tag along" with students and see what is happening in the workshops.
Q: Are participants required to stay for lunch and a tour?
A: The lunch and tour is optional, but you must reserve a space on your application. The Doane Admissions department will host a free lunch in our dining hall and will take students and teachers/sponsors on a tour of the campus. This is also FREE. It will begin as soon as the CSI workshop is over and will end around 2:00 p.m.
