What is Roots & Shoots?

The Roots & Shoots program is about making positive change happen—for our communities, for animals and for the environment. And it all starts with you! With tens of thousands of young people in almost 100 countries, the Roots & Shoots network branches out across the globe, connecting youth of all ages who share a common desire to help make our world a better place. This powerful, youth-driven network fosters a fun, flexible and supportive environment where young people and adults alike come together to share ideas and inspiration, implement successful community service projects and participate in special events and global campaigns.

In Fall 2007, the Roots and Shoots group organized a "Trash Bags to Hand Bags" project.  The community was invited to learn how to take plastic bags and turn them into reusable bags to be used in place of the plastic bags you get from such places as Walmart, Shopko or Target.

First-year student Liz Doane was selected as one of four U.S. Roots & Shoots representatives to participate in a Leadership Exchange in China.  The four American students selected will work with students involved in Roots & Shoots in China to design programs that will be carried out simultaneously in both countries.  (Read more)
