Program OfferingsDoane's sociology major involves the systematic study of groups and institutions, examining the social world using a variety of approaches. Students learn about urban and rural life, family patterns and relationships, social classes, social movements, crime and the criminal justice system, and contemporary social issues. Options include:
- General sociology major
- Criminology emphasis
The sociology minor complements other social science majors, such as psychology and political science. It includes several of the same courses required for the sociology major.
Program Emphases
The sociology program at Doane places strong emphases on:
- Service learning, with opportunities in child protective services, policing, and corrections
- Research - students are encouraged to develop and present their research and ideas at regional/national undergraduate sociological symposiums

Facilities/Technology
- Gaylord Hall, one of three Doane buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places, houses Sociology faculty offices and most Sociology classrooms.
- Lied Science and Mathematics Building is a $10.2 million, 60,000 square-foot building which features high-tech science labs and general purpose classrooms.
- The Communications Center houses faculty offices, classrooms, computer labs, the library, and art gallery.
