Program Offerings
The department of philosophy and religious studies offers you the opportunity to explore deep-rooted values and ideals that play a role in shaping the world, its people, and cultures.
Philosophy Major
- Highlights the study of values, emphasizing social and political areas. Also includes a strong emphasis on the relationships between philosophy and science.
- Course work includes informal logic, formal logic, ancient and medieval philosophy, world views, philosophy of science, human rights, ethics, and history and philosophy of technology. The major culminates in a comprehensive examination and thesis.
- Philosophy Minor
- The philosophy minor combines well with many of Doane's
disciplines, such as religious studies, business, political science,
and sociology.
Majors Combinations
Students are strongly encouraged to combine a philosophy major with another major at Doane, in any of the college's disciplines. Strong combinations include sociology, biology, business administration, English, education, or a foreign language.
Graduate Programs
Alumni also pursue graduate and doctorate degrees following Doane, at such institutions as:
- Boston University
- Harvard University
- Loyola University
- University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Approximately 10-15 students are in the program each year.

Requirements for a Philosophy Minor
Complete 18 credits of Philosophy and Religious Studies courses.
