Program Features
The Music Department prepares students for careers in music and music education through the serious study of performance, theory, music history, music literature, conducting, and teaching methods.
Program Emphases
Doane provides three areas of emphases for music majors:
- Music
- Music Performance (vocal, instrumental, piano)
- Music Education
- Dual certification in vocal and instrumental music offers graduates flexibility in finding jobs
Course Offerings
A wide variety of academic and performance courses are available to all students in the music department. A partial list of course offerings includes: music history, theory, conducting, instrumental methods, education methods, and music for young children.
Students
- Approximately 240 students enrolled in the program
- About 50 students involved in programs of supervised student teaching
Facilities
Music classes are held in the Communications Center, which features rehearsal rooms for band and choir and numerous practice rooms, including private suites complete with a digital piano. Concerts are held in Heckman Auditorium, which is recognized across the state as a quality performance facility.
Scholarships
A wide variety of scholarships for both music majors and non-music majors are available. Awards are based on several criteria: level of musicianship, need for voice/instrument part, and financial need of the student. Scholarship auditions are scheduled throughout the winter. Contact the Office of Admission for specific times and dates.
Requirements for a Music Minor
Complete 24 credits of Music and Fine Arts courses.
Secondary Education Course Requirements
Teachers are certified for secondary schools when completing a teaching major or endorsement in one of the following areas: art, biology, business principles, chemistry, English, English/language arts, French, German, history, mathematics, music, natural science, physical science, political science, social science, Spanish, speech communication and theatre, and theatre and drama.
Additional requirements include:
- Complete seven courses in Education at the 200-400 level
- Complete the special methods requirement in each of the teaching majors
- Complete the cognate in Information Science and Technology
- Attain a 3.00 GPA in education courses, 2.80 GPA in teaching major, and 2.80 cumulative GPA
- Receive the recommendation of the Teacher Education Committee
- Complete 12 graduate credits in the summer immediately following graduation and prior to certification.
A second teaching major or endorsement is required when majoring in the following: Biology, Business Principles, Chemistry, English, French, German, History, Physical Education, Physics, Political Science, Spanish, Speech Communication, and Theatre.
A computer science teaching endorsement or coaching endorsement may be added to the teaching majors. See the requirements listed under Information Science and Technology.
