"History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again."
Maya Angelou
"The past does not repeat itself, but it rhymes."
Mark Twain
History is the study of the past, of events, of people, of ideas, and of change over time. Students of history learn about what shapes our historical consciousness and how the present continues to be influenced by the past. At Doane, the history major offers the opportunity to study Western and non-Western cultures, from the Roman period through contemporary times.
History graduates go on to numerous careers including teaching, law, journalism, and government. Over the years, a number of Doane history majors have won the prestigious Fulbright scholarship for post-graduation employment and/or research at international locations. Other students have attended law school and graduate school, pursuing a range of degrees and careers.
The History Major at Doane offers the opportunity for internships within the historical profession. In the past, students have worked at the Nebraska State Historical Society and in the Doane College Archives. In addition, students can work directly with faculty members through the Summer Research Grant program and in specially designed courses focusing on a specific topic not offered as part of the regular course rotation.
A history major or minor combines well with a variety of Doane programs of study, such as business, English, foreign languages, political science, and art.
