The environmental science program at Doane is centered around the core subjects of organismal and environmental biology. Students are required to take courses in zoology, botany, bacteriology, and ecology.

Facilities/Technology
Many courses are held in the $10.2 million Lied Science and Mathematics Building (completed in 1999):

  • students have hands-on access to high-tech instruments such as a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer, 80 Olympus microscopes, 15 dissecting microscopes, scanning electron microscope, and laptop computers.

Students study extensively in the field:

  • conducting research at Doane's Aldrich Prairie Research Site
  • studying and analyzing various ecosystems in the area, including aquatic, forest, prairie, and flood plain sites

Coursework

Students also learn related aspects of environmental issues with courses in:

  • Economics
  • Political Science
  • Regulatory Law

Requirements for an Environmental Studies Minor

Complete at least 19 credits of courses under Business, Economics, Environmental Science, and either Biology and Geology or English and Political Science.
