Central to all is teaching students the basics to what makes good form (whether it's pottery or sculpture), how to think critically about their work, and to apply their creativity to their chosen medium.  It is a challenge that we look forward to. - Gary John Martin

Fields of Interest/Endeavor:

Since graduate school, where I was involved with ceramic sculpture, I have been developing my skills as a studio potter.  I have an ongoing interest in clay and glaze technology.  Most recently, I have been developing a white stoneware clay that is able to throw well, withstand high stoneware temperatures (2300-2400 degrees Fahrenheit), and will further enhance the brilliancy of my glazes.  The white clay body acts as the canvas upon which I can develop my abstract landscapes.  Using large bowl or platter forms allows me to create interesting imagery within the boundaries of these forms.  Surface decoration has always been a strong consideration in my functional and sculptural works.

Glaze chemistry plays an important role to the finished clay work.  I am always seeking a more colorful palette that will enhance my visual forms.  Many hours are spent developing and testing new colors and their interaction together.  For every successful experiment, there are numerous failures - such is the life of a clay artist.
