Roommates: Making the Relationship Work

Roommates: Making the relationship work

Difficulties may occasionally arise when you share the same space.  The most important skill you and your roommate need is open communication.  In order to keep life running smoothly, share with each other your likes and dislikes before problems occur.  Putting yourself in your roommate's shoes gives you a better perspective of how they might react.  When problems do arise, remember to calmly and directly (without personal attack) tell your roommate how you feel.  Be open and honest and give your roommate the chance to do the same.  If problems reach the point where you cannot communicate, ask a residence life staff member to help you - they are trained to mediate and facilitate communication.  Roommates and suite-mates must be the same gender.
