Fine & Performing Arts Scholarship Information
Students applying for a fine and performing arts scholarship must have applied and been admitted to Doane College. If you have not yet applied, please complete our online application.
- Art
Applications for a scholarship in art must be accompanied by six or more pieces of your artwork in any media. The Doane College Art Department awards art scholarships based on the quality of your work, your merit, and academic promise. A personal conference with the department is desirable. (A conference is not essential if enough work, 6-8 samples, are submitted to form a basis for judgment. Slides of work or digital files are acceptable.) Students receiving scholarships in art are required to take at least two art courses per academic year, of which one must be a studio course. You will also be required to maintain a B average in these courses and to submit studio art work to the Annual All-Student Art Exhibition.
- Forensics (Speech)
Applicants for scholarships in forensics must formally audition for the Director of Forensics. You're encouraged to carefully prepare for your audition ahead of time. You will need to perform a 5-10-minute individual forensics piece in the event of your choice. Practice thoroughly and plan to look and sound your best. Remember, this audition serves two purposes. It is an opportunity for you to make an impression on us, both as an individual and as a speaker, and it is also an opportunity for us to make an impression on you. When you decide which day you would like to audition, please contact the Office of Admission to schedule a time (800.333.6263 toll-free).
Students who receive a scholarship in forensics are required to:
- Be in good academic standing consistent with graduation
- Register for CMS 226/227, Competitive Speech, or CMS 326/327, Advanced
Competitive Speech, unless given special permission for non-registration. Students
may register for either 0 or 3 credits.
- Participate in at least eight regular season tournaments per year, excluding the NIFA
state tournament and AFA nationals (nationals and state are required).
- Compete in at least three events.
- Participate in the administration of all speech events hosted by Doane College.
- Music
Scholarships in music at Doane College are available for both majors and non-majors. Many of the students who participate in performance ensembles (band and choir) are non-music majors yet still receive music scholarships. Applicants for scholarships in music must complete an audition with the Music Department. The audition serves two purposes. It is an opportunity for you, as an individual and a musician, to make an impression on us. It also provides an opportunity for us to make an impression on you. You should also prepare your performance material ahead of time so that you can do your best. Students may audition for both vocal and instrumental scholarships. While this can mean more scholarship funds, it also requires the student to perform in two ensembles and possibly take additional lessons.
Vocal Scholarship Auditions
Prepare one solo of contest quality (i.e., something you would take to district music contest). You will be asked to vocalize patterns to test voice range and tonal imagery, and may be asked to sightread.
Instrumental Scholarship Auditions
Prepare a solo on your instrument of contest quality (i.e., something you would take to district music contest). You will be asked to perform scales to demonstrate your range and sight-read a selection to demonstrate your music literacy skills.
Students who receive a scholarship for performance ensembles are required to take from two to seven semesters of lessons (at no cost to you), depending upon the amount of ability-based scholarship money you receive. Students with higher scholarship awards are also asked to take FAR 104 (developing musical skills). This music fundamentals course will fulfill the Aesthetic Perspective requirement in the Doane Plan.
Our open audition dates are listed below. Students unable to make it to campus to audition may submit a recorded audition - click here for more information on Long Distance Music Auditions. If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Admission (800.333.6263 toll-free).

- Theatre
Applicants for scholarships in theatre must complete an audition or interview with the Doane College Theatre Department. Those interested in acting should prepare a one to two minute monologue from any play that you wish. The flexibility of material allows you to explore your genre of personal choice: classical, contemporary, comic, or dramatic. While not required, our theatre faculty strongly encourage you to memorize the monologue. Those interested in technical theatre from design to stage management will complete an interview. All applicants (acting and technical) are encouraged to bring a portfolio of your work including: a personal photo, resume listing any previous work and/or special skills, two letters of recommendation, and photos of your work or roles performed. Our open audition dates are listed below. If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Admission (800.333.6263 toll-free).
