Choral Organizations
Collegiate Chorale MUS 192 (0-1)
Collegiate Chorale is a non-auditioned, well-balanced choir of 50-60 voices. It performs three or four times on campus during the academic year and off-campus as well. Collegiate joined the Doane Choir for a Lincoln Symphony collaboration in December of 2005 and participated in a choral festival with Weston Noble in the fall of 2006. The group includes students of diverse ages and majors. Prerequisite: Permission.
Doane Choir MUS 191 (0-1)
An auditioned choir of 45-50 voices, the Doane Choir is the college's premier choral ensemble. Continuing students audition in the spring and new students audition in the fall. Membership is based on these auditions and takes into consideration both musical talent and ensemble needs. Members rehearse four times a week for a total of four-and-one-half hours. Participation in the ensemble can be used for partial fulfillment of the Aesthetic Perspective requirement of the Doane Plan. The Doane Choir performs three concerts on campus annually. The choir also tours annually to a region of the United States or Europe. The ensemble has received regular invitations from around the state to perform with the state's top professional orchestras and music conferences. Prerequiste: Audition.
Double Wide MUS 197 (0-1)
A fifteen-member audition a cappella male ensemble, this group specializes in barbershop, doo-wop, and male glee club music. This music group gives several concerts and shows in the region each year as well as tours annually with Jazz Unlimited. Prerequisite: Fall audition.
Jazz Unlimited MUS 194 (0-1)
This contemporary vocal jazz ensemble of sixteen singers and three instrumentalists (piano, bass, and drums) performs pop, rock, and jazz tunes. Many performances are scheduled each year. Most numbers are choreographed. Auditions are open to any individual with singing skills and are held each fall. All selected members must also hold membership in Doane Choir or Collegiate Chorale. Prerequisite: Audition.
Instrumental Organizations
Concert Band MUS 190 (0-1)
The all-college Concert Band is open to all students. Auditions for chair placement take place in the fall. Performances include two scheduled concerts per semester and participation in important college ceremony functions. Participation in the Concert Band can be used to partially fulfill the Aesthetic Perspective requirement of the Doane Plan. Prerequisite: Audition.
Jazz Band MUS 193 (0-1)
The Doane Jazz Band is an ensemble that performs a variety of jazz, rock, Latin, swing, and fusion styles. The Jazz Band is open to all students by audition or permission. Rehearsals are on Monday and Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The Jazz Band generally performs twice a semester. The possibility of travel opportunities is dependent on the performance requests the ensemble accepts. Additionally, the Jazz Ensemble often joins the Symphonic Wind Ensemble on its annual tour. Prerequisite: Audition.
Symphonic Wind Ensemble MUS 195 (0-1)
The premier wind-based ensemble of the college, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble is open to students by audition. Continuing students audition in the spring and new students audition in the fall. Selection is based on these auditions and ensemble instrumentation. Members rehearse four times a week for a total of four-and-one-half hours. Participation in the ensemble can be used for partial fulfillment of the Aesthetic Perspective requirement of the Doane Plan. The ensemble generally schedules two to three performances a semester and performs on an annual tour. Tour locations have included cities such as New York, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. A significant portion of the tour's costs have generally been paid for by the college, allowing students to travel at minimal cost. Prerequisite: Audition.
String Chamber Music MUS 196 (0-1)
The String Chamber ensemble consists of students who play violin, viola, cello, or bass. The ensemble performs on the college departmental concerts as well as in conjunction with the choral department's major works, such as the recent performance of Bach's Cantata Christ lag in Todesbanden BWV 4. Prerequisite: Audition.
Tiger Pep Band ATV 106 (0-1)
The Tiger Pep Band plays for all home football games and a few additional athletic events during the fall semester. It is open to all students. Members attend nine one-hour rehearsals. Participation in the Tiger Pep Band can be used to partially fulfill the Aesthetic Perspective requirement of the Doane Plan. (Pass/Fail)
