Update
January 22
Hi Everyone, I know you've been following some of the New York Times front-page news about violence in Kenya. I Skyped our volunteers just a few minutes ago to check on their safety. They say the village is safe. They know the plan for going to Tanzania (where we have friends) in the event things change.
Meanwhile, they go to and from school without any problems and life is okay. Of course everyone hopes Kibaki and Odinga will settle their issues and come to a compromise on power-sharing.
I will continue to check in with them and get back to you. Betty
Hey
January 18
Sorry I haven't written in forever, I haven't been online much. Things seem to be calming down here. The first round of negotiations between Kibaki and Raila fell through but there are more planned soon with a new mediator. We will see. The last three days ODM called for mass "peaceful" protests, but they haven't been very successful, the streets are crawling with police. We just got back from Lamu and Shawna's parents left yesterday. Lamu was fun, we went to see the ruins on Manda. Have you been before? They are neat. Ray is still with us, I think he is going to come to the village for a couple days. We went to get our visas extended today, we were successful but it took something like 6 hours. We're heading to the village on Sunday and we will start teaching again on Monday. Finally. Well I should go, but I just wanted to check in. Hope all is well in Lincoln/Crete. I don't know when we will e-mail again, but we always have our phone.
Take care, Amy
