Hi Everyone,
Carla and I are back in Maseru after a wonderful week in the mountains of Lesotho. I could write another book. We spent Christmas eve dinner with 28 people, a large family who own two lodges and trading post---now five generations in Lesotho. Met alot of travelers, locals, ex-pats, Peace Corps.
From the little I've seen of this country---nicknamed "Kingdom in the Sky"--I'm blown away. It's summer here and the countryside is lushly green. Terraced farms, traditional life still exists here:--round stone hut villages, pony transport, ox plows, freindly people.
At the moment we're waiting for transport to Bloemfontein where we are picking up a rental car. Seems like thats the best way to get to Swazi, Mozambique, and back to Jo'burg.
Meanwhile, we have had some adventures: hiking in the villages, pony trekking in the mountains, and Carla's brave abseil adventure. She spent her birthday abseiling over the cliffs of the Guiness World Record Maletsunyane Falls. It's over 204 meters. I was afraid just watching. My excuse was a sore back from the pony, but truly I wouldn't have the guts. She's got a certificate now!
There are more stories, but I need to look for our taxi. Hope you have had good holidays. We're doing well--thinking of all of you. Missing you too .
love, Betty
I'll write more from the next stop.
