Our Wilderness Heritage - Liberal Arts Seminar 101
The Colorado Rockies: A Magnificent Outdoor Classroom
The Rocky Mountains are a living showcase of grandeur ranging from grassy valleys to peaks of over 14,000 feet. Opportunities abound for exhilarating outdoor experiences and adventures. In August, before fall semester begins, students in the first year seminar class Our Wilderness Heritage spend four days camping in Rocky Mountain National Park. We hike the trails, go rafting on the Colorado River, and deepen our appreciation of wildlife and wild places. We also participate in National Park Service volunteer opportunities. During both the trip in advance of the semester and the on-campus meetings during fall term, students will seek to answer questions like these: Why is it important to preserve wilderness? How will climate change impact Rocky Mountain National Park and other wilderness areas? How can individuals change life patterns to reduce climate change to support wild places?
