Congratulations to our 2011 graduate, Rick Bazata, who accepted a position as mechanical design engineer at Inter-Motion, in Kearney, NE.

Doane physics majors Amy Craig, Brad Higgins, and Matt Steffens worked this summer with Professor Chris Wentworth on research funded by the Doane College Summer Undergraduate Research Program.  Amy and Brad worked on research involving image processing of plant root growth.  The work is in collaboration with Assistant Professor Tessa Durham Brooks in the Biology Department.  Matt developed computer simulations of biofilm growth.  This work is in collaboration with Professor Barb Clement in the Biology Department.

Doane physics major Micah Marvin, and Brett Amen worked with Associate Professor of Physics Mark Plano Clark  this summer on building a scanning tunneling electron microscope.  Their work is funded by the Research Experience for Faculty and Students at Undergraduate Institutions offered by the Materials Research Science and Engineering Center at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln and by EPSCOR-Nebraska, grants obtained by Dr. Plano Clark.

Introduction to the Department

Physics major in NebraskaDo you want to look inside an atom, visualize the sound of a trumpet, or gaze on a supernova?  Do you want to design a rocket engine that sends people into outer space or program a computer to simulate life?  These are just a few of the things a physics major might do.

We offer a physics major and minor, described on the Physics Major page.  Our curriculum emphasizes doing science, not just learning about science, so all courses give students the opportunity to work on experimental and theoretical projects. Many opportunities exist to work with faculty on research projects while at Doane.

Projects Supported by the Department of Physics

The links below go to educational projects of national interest developed by faculty and students in the Department of Physics.

Doane Physics Video Library
This library contains video clips of physics-related phenomena in Quicktime and Flash formats. The clips can be used with video analysis software to obtain data. This collection was chosen to be a quality peer-reviewed resource by MERLOT (www.merlot.org).

The Humanized Physics Project
This NSF supported curriculum development project seeks to create an algebra-based introductory physics curriculum motivated by exploring how the human body works.
