Doane offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Science with a teaching endorsement in natural science. This degree offers certification in all sciences (chemistry, physics, biology, and earth science) in grades 7-12 as well as a minor in biology or chemistry.
The government Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that job prospects are particularly good for "teachers in high-demand fields like ... science..." Because of its flexibility graduates with this degree are highly sought after. This major is a part of the Doane College four-year guarantee. If you cannot finish this program in four years Doane will assume costs during the next two consecutive semesters of the courses needed to complete the program.
Doane students who decide to major in Natural Science study in a cooperative program within the Education Division and the Science, Mathematics, and Information Science and Technology Division. They register for courses in the Education Division to complete certification. Our Education Division has a national reputation. In 1983 Doane became the nation's first college to warranty graduates with teacher certification. The warranty guarantees school districts that our graduates will meet the schools' expectations. We also have a long history of nearly 100 percent teacher placement.
The Lied Science and Mathematics Building is designed with inquiry-based teaching in mind. The advantage for future science teachers is that it allows Doane faculty to model contemporary teaching technologies and methods that you may then take to your classroom.
Why Teach?
Some are drawn to teaching by a love of the subject matter. They enter a particular field because they are interested in chemistry, biology or some other subject. They hope to enthuse new generations of young people. Others are interested in the development of young people as they grow to personal maturity. They feel that they can help students grow into responsible adults. Others are stimulated by the variety that characterizes a teacher's day. They enjoy going to work knowing that each day will be different.
Whether involved in teaching for intellectual attainment, citizenship, or vocational preparation, the feeling of having played some part in the progress of students is rewarding. Whatever your reason for considering a career in science teaching, Doane College is uniquely qualified to provide a science teaching program which satisfies your needs.
