About the Music Major

Program Features Practice

The Music Department prepares students for careers in music and music education through the serious study of performance, theory, music history, music literature, conducting, and teaching methods.

Program Emphases

Doane provides three areas of emphases for music majors:

Music
Music Performance (vocal, instrumental, piano)
Music Education
Dual certification in vocal and instrumental music offers graduates flexibility in finding jobs.

Course Offerings

A wide variety of academic and performance courses are available to all students in the music department. A partial list of course offerings includes: music history, theory, conducting, instrumental methods, education methods, and music for young children.

Students

  • Approximately 200 students enrolled in the music department
  • About 30 students involved in programs of supervised student teaching

Facilities

Music classes are held in the Communications building, which features rehearsal rooms for band and choir and numerous practice rooms. Concerts are held in Heckman Auditorium, which is recognized across the state as a quality performance facility.  Many recitals also occur in the acoustically superb Whitcomb-Lee Conservatory.

Scholarships

A wide variety of generous scholarships for both music majors and non-music majors are available. Awards are based on several criteria: level of musicianship, need for voice/instrument part, a student's academic credentials, and financial need of the family. Scholarship auditions are scheduled throughout the winter. Contact the Office of Admission for specific times and dates.
