Doane College Sponsors triMATHlon Math Contest
The Tenth Annual Doane triMATHlon Math Contest was held Thursday, October 1, 2009. The participating high schools in the Division I competition were Lincoln East, Lincoln Northeast, Lincoln Southeast, Lincoln Southwest, Norris, Omaha Central, Bellevue East, Bellevue West and Seward. The participating high schools in the Division II competition were Bertrand, Brownell-Talbot, Crete, Deshler, Falls City Public, Harvard, Osceola, Thayer Central and Weeping Water.
The math contest consisted of three stages. The Extreme Team Challenge event involved the use of directional compasses to locate large trapezoids laid out in the campus green, as well as questions about the bell tower and other historical sites on campus. The Individual Written Test was a 30-question, multiple-choice exam. The Math Bowl paired three-person teams in a quiz bowl tournament.
Division I
Division I Award Winners were as follows:
Individual Written Test award winners were: first place - Albert Zhou, Lincoln Southwest; second place -Darrin Lim, Lincoln East; third place - Trevor Savage, Bellevue East.
Honorable mention in the Written Test went to: Nate Germer, Alex Scheideler, Parviz Kholmatov, Preston Bradley, Maesen Churchill and Jahan Claes (all of Lincoln East), and Titus Tvrdy of Seward.
The Extreme Team Challenge award winners were: first place - Lincoln Southwest (Albert Zhou, John Jasa, Brian Vuu), second place - Lincoln East (Maesen Churchill, Jahan Claes, Preston Bradley), third place - Omaha Central (Caleb Koch, Eric Jizba, Josh Dewitt).
The award winners for the Math Bowl were: first place -Lincoln Southwest (Albert Zhou, John Jasa, Brian Vuu), second place - Lincoln East (Maesen Churchill, Jahan Claes, Preston Bradley), third place - Bellevue East (Patrick Currington, Kate Reinhardt, Trevor Savage).
The Overall Team Champion was Lincoln Southwest, who was coached by Jeff Devries. Second and third places in the team competition were Lincoln East and Omaha Central, respectively.
Division II
Division II Award Winners were as follows:
Individual Written Test award winners: first place - Ian Suiter, Brownell-Talbot; second place - Linda Lui, Brownell-Talbot; third place - Paul Harding, Brownell-Talbot.
Honorable mention in the Written Test went to: Albert Chen of Brownell-Talbot, Jeffrey Bantam and Kesston Fink (both of Thayer Central), Dekota Lundy of Bertrand, Rodney Mount of Falls City, Thomas Vonderfecht of Deshler, and Cody Wendelin of Crete.
The Extreme Team Challenge award winners were: first place -Thayer Central (Courtney Yoachim, Kelsey Loonther, Nick Burkhardt), second place - Harvard (Seth Ross, Kristan Pelotte, Austin Uden), third place - Bertrand (Brock Taute, Dustin Renken, Michael Smith).
The award winners for the Math Bowl were: first place - Brownell-Talbot (Ian Suiter, Megan Shadlow, Paul Harding); second place - Thayer-Central (Kesston Fink, Jeffrey Bantam, Nick Burkhardt); third place - Bertrand (Brock Taute, Dustin Renken, Michael Smith).
The Overall Team Champion was Thayer Central, coached by Kristy Lukert. Second and third places in the team competition were Brownell-Talbot and Bertrand, respectively.
All individual award winners received medals or certificates, the Overall Team Winners received a trophy, and all participants received a triMATHlon T-shirt.
The contest was sponsored by the Doane College Mathematics Department, Doane Math Club and the Admissions Office.
